Work began on the old part of the elementary school north and east of Vatnajörður last summer, but not before the roof was replaced. The project was not yet complete when the school opened last fall, said Jóhann Bjarnason, the school’s principal.

“There were further details on the construction of the elevator, which was placed in the covered wall on the north side of the building. That’s why construction was delayed, but it started again this spring before school let out,” John said. Then the foundation for the elevator building began.

“In addition to this progress, the school’s main entrance will also be changed, it will now connect from the north entrance to the south entrance at the junction of the old and new parts of the school.” Work is currently underway to improve access. The hall will have new electrically controlled front doors and the same middle door. Interior doors will be widened where necessary and temporary dining facilities will be prepared for the school’s youngest pupils in years one and two. “Otherwise, the canteen will remain in the social centre for a while,” John said, and it’s not all listed yet.

The course stops in Holar

Teaching at Vatna East Primary School has been taking place in Hofsos and Hólar for the past few years, but the school in Hólar has now closed and from the next academic year all teaching at the school will take place in Hofsos. “It also explains that we need an extra room on the corridor with classrooms and the library facing away from the corridor. Obviously, it will take a lot of resources to make the whole school run as smoothly as possible,” John said, adding that there are plans to continue construction to build a gymnasium and other much-needed spaces in the school, such as a canteen, library and free time, etc.

In addition to the school building, the school grounds will also be overhauled, but John said playground equipment and facilities for the youngest students will be added next to the school, and a heated area from the student entrance to the school playground will be built on this new playground, then continue through the school grounds, past the football field to Lindargatu.
