Four members of the Swanu Party have been expelled from the party for allegedly not abiding by the party constitution.
South West African National Union (Swanu) president Evilastus Kaaronda yesterday expelled former leaders Charles Katjivirue and Sam Tjikuzu from the party for failing to abide by the party constitution.
Katjivirue and Tjikuzu were expelled along with former secretary-general Issasskar Kaureuombahe Hiakaere and former election director Emily Kazapua at a press conference at the party headquarters in Windhoek.
This follows a power struggle within the party that led the Windhoek High Court to order Kalonda and Katjewelu to convene a special meeting of the central committee on Saturday to resolve factional disputes.
Kalonda said the political bureau of Swanu agreed to hold the meeting in accordance with Article 11 of the party constitution and wrote to Kajiweru on July 11, inviting him to meet and start preparatory work.
He said: “On July 14, Kajivere wrote a letter clearly stating that he would not attend any illegal meeting as he believed that the court had given him the authority to not only prepare for the meeting but also to convene it.”
‘Irreparable harm’
The Central Committee reportedly confirmed that the meeting was valid and in compliance with the Constitution and court orders. The meeting also decided that Kalonda would be the party chairman and Kajiweru would be an ordinary member, “and his illegal leadership was revoked.”
“It is more important to call and chair the meeting rather than allow the party to be held hostage by someone who still thinks he is (the leader),” Kalonda said.
He added that Kajiwelu and Tikuzu’s misunderstanding of the court order had “caused irreparable damage to the party’s reputation”.
“Many clandestine activities and illegal meetings held in the name of the party, reminiscent of those declared illegal by court orders, are still being held with the aim of sowing division and confusion at the grassroots level of the party,” Kalonda said.
He argued that these reasons, among many others, formed the basis for the conference’s decision to expel Kajiwelu and his followers from the party. “If they are found or seen using the party’s name or property, they will face legal action. (This also applies to) anyone who assists them in violating the party’s decision to expel them,” he noted.
Attempts to reach Katjivirue and Tjikuzu were unsuccessful.
