The chief spokesman of the European Union’s Foreign Action Service called the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) political office in Tehran, an illegal and unacceptable act, adding that he was closely following reports about the incident.

Peter Stano told Iran’s Islamic News Agency on Wednesday: We are closely following reports that Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political office of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), was assassinated in Tehran last night.

Referring to the fact that Hamas is included in the EU’s list of so-called terrorist organizations, he clarified that the EU has a principled position in the field of “rejecting extrajudicial killings and supporting the rule of law”, including in the field of international criminal justice. »

An EU spokesman said: “We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid escalating tensions.”

Stano pointed out: “No country or nation will benefit from escalating tensions in the Middle East.”

According to the Islamic News Agency of Iran, the Public Relations Department of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a notice this morning saying that Ismail Haniyeh, director of the Hamas Political Office, and one of his bodyguards were martyred in Tehran due to an attack on their residence. The cause and scale of the incident are under investigation and the results will be announced later.

Following this cowardly act, governments, leaders and officials, resistance groups, civil society organizations and institutions, and people of all political and religious stripes around the world have reacted and condemned this horrific act.
