The unrest came after Monday’s shocking attack, when a peaceful vigil was held to remember the victims. Three children were stabbed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.
On Tuesday night, a police car was set on fire and men wearing balaclavas were fought off by police, with 27 officers needing to be taken to hospital for treatment.
Earlier, Assistant Chief Superintendent Alex Goss said: “There has been much speculation and assumption about the identity of a 17-year-old male currently in police custody and some have taken advantage of this to create violence and disorder on our streets.”

Footage shows man pacing outside house raided by armed police after Southport stabbing

Starmer: rioters will face the full force of the law
Sir Keir Starmer said the thugs who “hijacked” a vigil for the victims in Southport on Tuesday night will “feel the full force of the law”.
Sir Keir wrote on X: “The people of Southport are horrified by the horror they suffered yesterday.
“They deserve our support and respect. Those who hijack the memory of the victims with violence and brutality insult a community that is grieving.”
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the unrest outside a mosque in Southport as a “violent attack by street thugs” which she called “appalling”.
Ms Cooper told the broadcaster she saw the community “coming together” during her visit to Southport on Tuesday and thanked police for their “heroism”.
She added: “That’s why it was so shocking to see these officers being violently attacked on the streets by thugs who had no respect for the grieving community.
“It’s a complete disgrace. Frankly, everyone should be respecting the community and the police at this time.”

At least 39 police officers injured in Southport
The number of police officers injured in last night’s Southport unrest has risen to 39, according to emergency services.
The unrest began after a peaceful vigil for the victims of Monday’s knife attack was held at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in the Merseyside seaside town.
Merseyside Police said a “large group of people – believed to be supporters of the English Defence League” began throwing objects at a local mosque at around 7.45pm before clashing with officers.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the thugs who “hijacked” a vigil for the victims in Southport on Tuesday night will “feel the full force of the law”.
The North West Ambulance Service updated on Twitter that 37 police officers were injured in the violent riots, 27 of whom were sent to hospital and 12 were released after receiving on-site treatment.
The ambulance service said its personnel were eventually evacuated from the major incident at 1.25am.

22 police officers received ambulance services and the incident was declared a major incident
Twenty-two police officers were treated for injuries, 11 of whom were taken to hospital, and the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) declared a major incident.
In a series of tweets, NWAS said: “This evening we have been responding to disturbances in St Luke’s Road, Southport following a protest. “A number of resources have been on scene including 10 ambulances, duty doctors and our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).
“We have treated 22 officers, 11 of whom have been taken to hospital. Due to the high number of resources required at the scene and the ongoing disturbances, NWAS declared a major incident at approximately 23:00. Follow @MerseyPolice for the latest updates.”
