The future of Fiji Sevens head coach Saiasi Fuli now lies in the hands of the Fiji Rugby Union.

R&F said this when asked about his plans for the Fiji Sevens rugby team after the Paris Olympics.

Some have taken to social media to call on the FRU to change the Fiji Rugby Sevens coaching staff following yesterday’s fourth straight defeat.

Some have questioned the system in place, especially considering Fury has been with the team for the past five years and the players are experienced enough to compete at that level.

“My intention is just to coach them in the four years leading up to the Olympics and the next Olympics. It is up to Fiji Rugby to decide, I cannot decide anything,” Fury said.

He said he had spoken to the team about his intentions.

“I have other things to do in my life for my family, but right now my focus is finishing the race in Paris.”

In 2019, Fury took over as Fiji Sevens coach from Ro Alifereti Doviverata.

He led the national women’s team to a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

“I have managed this team well over the past four years, from 14th to sixth in the second division, and we have made great progress over the last few years.

“The reality of rugby is that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose and despite the preparation being well organised, with the support of Fiji Rugby, and the support of the government and the public, the result was not what we had hoped for but that is what it is and that is the result,” Fury said.

The FRU is expected to carry out a full review of the Olympic squad in August.

“I would like to acknowledge and commend the dedication and hard work of Saiasi Fuli. Coach Fuli is an integral part of our program and has brought his expertise to the development and performance of the Fiji Rugby 7s team,” said FRU interim president Peter Mazey.

“As is customary, we will conduct a comprehensive review of our Olympic journey.

“This review will include an assessment of all aspects of our preparation and performance, including coaching, training programmes and support systems.”

Fuli and the Fiji 7s rugby team will leave France on August 2 and arrive in France on August 4 along with the men’s team.
