Lukashenko pardoned German citizen Rico Krieger, who was sentenced to death, according to the Lukashenko news agency.
“Krieger was found guilty under Article 6 of the Criminal Code and sentenced by the court to a special penalty. As previously reported, Krieger appealed to Lukashenko for a pardon. … Taking into account all the circumstances, the decision to grant a pardon was made,” the statement said.
The decision to pardon was made after Lukashenko consulted “with people involved in the process,” from whom he “heard the details and opinions.”
The German citizen was charged under six articles of the Criminal Code: Section 1 Art. 133 (mercenary); Section 3 Art. 289 (terrorist acts); Section 4 Art. 295 (illegal activities related to firearms, ammunition and explosives); Section 4 Art. 309 (making transport or means of communication unusable); Section 3 Art. 361−1 (creation of an extremist organization or participation in it); Art. 358−1 (undercover activities).
Krieg is on trial for the explosion near the Ozerishche railway station. According to the authorities, Krieg entered Belarus as a tourist on October 2, 2023 with a mobile phone and a drone. On October 4, he “conducted reconnaissance in Osipovichi, photographed the territory of the 97115th military unit, military equipment, and the next day – a section of railroad tracks, freight cars, a loading platform near the Ozerishche railway station, and sent the data to representatives of the Ukrainian special forces.”
“From there I received the coordinates and a photo of a cache with an improvised explosive device, as well as instructions for installing it on the railway. Krieger found the cache in a forest plantation in the Pervomaisky district of Minsk, supported by wires. He took out a backpack with a homemade explosive device (at least 3 kg of HMX explosives), transported it and installed it on the Ozerishcha railway tracks,” the Belarusian propagandist claimed.
The explosion occurred around midnight on October 5. The next day, Krieger planned to fly to Baku but was detained.
