South American country wins unprecedented bronze medal at Olympics
On Tuesday (30th), Italy and Brazil won historic silver and bronze medals respectively in the rhythmic gymnastics team final at the Paris Olympics in France.
For Brazil, reaching the podium at the Bercy Arena was an unprecedented feat for the country, while Italy won a medal in this category again after nearly 100 years.
The Brazilian team of Rebeca Andrade, Flávia Saraiva, Lorrane Oliveira, Jade Barbosa and Julia Soares scored 164,497 points, surpassing the British team, which finished with 164,263 points.
Brazil fluctuated between fifth and sixth for much of the meet, but the turning point came on jumps by Saraiva and Andrade. The gymnasts shined on apparatus, crucial to their historic bronze medal.
The Azzurri, represented by Manila Esposito, Alice D’Amato, Angela Andreoli, Elisa Iorio and Giorgia Villa, scored 165,494 points in the standings, ahead of the United States, led by Simone Biles, who won the gold medal with 171,296 points.
Italy has not won a medal in the rhythmic gymnastics team event since taking silver at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Brazil won four medals at the Paris Olympics, three bronze and one silver, while Italy won nine medals, two gold, four silver and three bronze.
