Israel’s Ministry of Health issued a written statement regarding cases of West Nile virus in the country.

So far, 738 people across the country have tested positive for West Nile virus, the statement said.

Since June, 51 people have died from the virus, which is spread by mosquito bites.

Israel reportedly sees cases of West Nile virus between June and September every year, but they started occurring earlier this year due to climate change.

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that first appeared in the West Nile region of Uganda in 1937 and can cause death.

The risk of the virus is said to be greater, especially for the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
