Walvis Bay Mayor Trevisno Forbes announced that the town will host a stocktaking event on November 16, in conjunction with the 20th meeting of the Walvis Bay Environmental Management and Advisory Forum (WEMAF).
Forbes made the remarks during an ordinary council meeting last week, according to whom the council received an unsolicited proposal for a turnkey waste-to-energy plant from a Finnish company (through the Finnish Embassy) that promised to provide an innovative solution to the town’s solid waste landfill challenges and related environmental and socio-economic issues.
“Walvis Bay City Council has made great strides in global environmental stewardship and we successfully secured funding to host a mini-COP meeting at our Town Hall to localise the international stocktake event ahead of COP28 in Dubai. Under the banner of #Stocktake4ClimateEmergency, hundreds of other cities, towns and regions have been invited to host events in 2023 to make an official contribution to the global stocktake of the Paris Agreement – essentially turning our Town Hall into a mini-COP venue.”
Global Support
According to Forbes, Walvis Bay is one of ten cities or regions in the global South that have successfully applied to host a local inventory event.
“The Global South support funding is provided by the Institute of Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), which serves as the focal point for the Local Governments and Municipalities (LGMA) constituency. The proposed turnkey solution can serve the entire Erongo region and beyond, meeting the region’s fuel needs.”
“The next step is to invite all important key stakeholders such as the Governor’s Office, Erongo District Council, local authorities, Erongo RED, relevant ministries and local private companies and the Finnish proposer to a kick-off workshop to present, brainstorm, gain in-principle support and pave the way for the establishment of the Erongo Waste-to-Energy Plant in Walvis Bay. Your support for this noble approach will help put our town and region on the national and global map of environmental management,” Forbes added.
