29 July 2024 (Khartoum) – UNDP Sudan has delivered more than 20 metric tons of essential medicines, diagnostic equipment and supplies to ensure that patients across the country can continue to receive HIV and tuberculosis treatment.
The shipment of 20.3 tons of medical supplies and information and communications technology (ICT) was reportedly valued at nearly $900,000 and was funded by a grant from the Global Fund.

“The medicines, diagnostic tools and supplies in this shipment will be distributed to beneficiaries across the country. They will be used to replenish the MDR-TB drugs and pediatric antiretroviral drugs lost during the escalation of conflict in Sudan in November 2023, thereby resuming treatment for more than 120 MDR-TB patients and 368 children living with HIV/AIDS,” the statement said.
“The shipment also carried adult antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, which will be used by 11,429 people living with HIV/AIDS,” the statement added.
The consignment includes antiretroviral treatment for adults and children living with HIV (PLHIV), anti-TB drugs for multi-drug resistant TB patients, laboratory consumables and diagnostic equipment, and ICT equipment to support the Federal Ministry of Health and national projects.
“UNDP commends the Federal Ministry of Health for its resilience and commitment to delivering health services during this time. Strengthening systems to support national capacity is at the core of our mission in Sudan,” said Luca Lunda, UNDP Resident Representative in Sudan.
“We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Global Fund and other partners to strengthen the medicines/health products supply and distribution system, which will ensure continuity of HIV and TB treatment while laying the foundation for a sustainable healthcare system in the country in the future.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Sarah Abdullah Azari, Director General of the Communicable Disease Control Bureau at the Federal Ministry of Health, said the Federal Ministry of Health was pleased to receive the batch of essential medicines assisted by UNDP.
“This will allow us to continue providing health services to the Sudanese people through treatment for tuberculosis and HIV,” she explained, adding that “UNDP Sudan and the Global Fund have been excellent partners in maintaining and supporting the country’s public health system.”
UNDP Sudan, in partnership with the Global Fund, is bringing together federal and state ministries of health, the National Medical Supplies Fund, UN agencies and other health partners to ensure continuity of primary health care services in emergencies, particularly by supporting the national response to HIV and tuberculosis and ensuring real-time procurement and distribution of medicines.
