Affordable, durable housing is important for all – Chakwera

Lilongwe, July 29, Mana: President Lazarus Chakwera has stressed that affordable and durable housing solutions must be provided to all citizens if Malawi is to eliminate thatched houses.

He spoke at a housing seminar held at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Monday.

He said the seminar, themed “Achieving Sustainable and Affordable Housing in Malawi 2063”, was a milestone event in a new era for Malawi’s housing sector.

“We conducted an in-depth analysis of the problem of lack of durability of houses in Malawi,” said Chakwera.

He stressed that the government’s initial focus was on providing housing for police and army personnel, with plans to build 10,000 houses.

So far, 1,000 houses have been completed and about 4,000 are at various stages of construction.

“Today, we deem it necessary to extend this initiative to all Malawians,” the President proudly declared.

Chakwera launched the 250 project, which aims to build 250,000 houses, of which 500 are already under construction.

The project promises to build 25,000 houses per year, marking a major step towards achieving Malawi’s 2063 goal.

Lands Minister Deus Gumba said the workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss and develop solutions to challenges facing the housing sector.

“It underscores the importance of sustainable and affordable housing to achieving Malawi’s broader vision for 2063. As Malawi embarks on this transformative journey, the commitment to providing durable and affordable housing for all citizens remains a top priority,” Gamba said.

He said the launch of these projects heralded a bright future where every Malawian could look forward to improved living conditions and a better quality of life.
