The Estonian double sculls team finished fourth in the preliminary rounds of the Paris Olympics. The competition will continue on Monday. Analyzing the preliminary rounds of the Estonian four-boat race, the experienced 45-year-old Tõnu Endrekson pointed out exactly where the problems arose compared to the competitors.
“I would say we left the start well. At 200m or even earlier, you turn your head once and you realise ahaha, everything is good. But at 300-350m, when you have to switch from start to distance work – that’s the hardest moment for us, switch to a good, economical work that lasts about a kilometre anyway, now switch to distance work it wears you out. Not good for me,” Endreksen commented. “It tires the muscles. You feel too much so-called heavy water behind the paddle. We don’t do it all together.”
Endreksson admits that change-of-pace moments have been a challenge in his career with four boats carrying 400 kilograms: “Whether the team is able to switch to remote working. Sometimes it happens earlier, sometimes later. It also depends on the race. I think we are currently the worst in the world in this regard, and you can’t think about whether we will be able to cope with the switch – it would be an obstacle.”
According to Enderkesen, it is possible to improve the pace in the race. “Yesterday (in training) we did the same 500m section – the start and the exit. The first time it was bad,” he explained. “Then we turned around and did it again. It went really well.”
Unlike the nuances of the Lucerne rowing course, understanding the specifics of the Paris course still requires a lot of thought. “This course is new for us, I have never raced here in my career. We have rowed here, the crosswinds were strong and we did not row over waves. But the crosswinds are gusty and can surprise people. You have to pay attention” Endrekson also has advice for rowing enthusiasts.
After the preliminaries, Estonian four-man boat coach Veikko Sinisalo of Finland greeted the competitors. “The Poles and Italians (Italy was ahead of Poland in the Estonian preliminaries – Editor’s note) have been at the top of the four-man boats for the last 10-20 years – and they still are. Of course, we will never lose, but we are just not fast enough,” said Sinisalo. “The second qualifying race was relatively equal in terms of time. We somehow ran into a wave of Italians – they were too far ahead of us, which was our fault, not theirs. The rain did not affect the race. We will try our best to reach the final on Monday.”
The four-boat race will start at 12:20 Estonian time on Monday, July 29 at the Paris Games.
