Hinemoana II, a catamaran canoe, is proud to announce Joelene Busby as the first female Maori captain to join its all-female crew. Busby joins Aunofo Havea, the first Tongan female captain, and Fani Bruun, the first Samoan female captain, in highlighting Pacific women’s leadership in ocean exploration.
With more than 20 years of experience in the industry, Busby follows in the footsteps of her great-grandfather, Sir Hector Busby. “Our shared values encompass wider themes such as marine conservation and cultural heritage protection,” Busby said.
Busby is also the founder of the Tokanui Trust, which is dedicated to passing on traditional Maori knowledge. The Hinimoana II voyage aims to raise funds for humpback whale monitoring in Tonga and contribute to global marine conservation efforts.
“It’s been a powerful movement… I feel so lucky and honored to be a part of this kaupapa,” Busby said, reflecting on the journey. “Water is the medicine for my people, and I hope to blaze a trail for future generations,” she added.
The voyage represented not only a cultural exchange but also a commitment to protecting the resources of the Pacific Ocean.
