Childline Botswana expresses deep shock and sadness at the recent spate of brutal murders of children’s biological fathers, a disturbing trend that has shaken the country.
Over the past month, a series of appalling incidents have shocked the nation, left communities in mourning and raised urgent questions about the mental health of society. Just last week, a father in Francistown shockingly lost the lives of his two children. On Wednesday, June 17, the nation woke up to the tragic news of a similar incident in Tati-Sidding.
These tragic events come on the heels of similar acts in Bobonong, Gaborone and Maun. Childline Botswana highlights that these barbaric acts are a manifestation of deeper problems in the fabric of society and emphasizes that such violence is not only a gross violation of children’s fundamental rights, but also a grave affront to our collective humanity.
In a heartfelt statement, Childline Botswana stressed the urgent need for societal reflection and action. “These barbaric acts expose the collective psychosocial well-being of our society; we should all be ashamed that we are concerned about this,” the organization said. “We cannot and should not ignore this epidemic that is spreading through our society as an integral part of gender-based violence; now, tragically, men are targeting their own children in a twisted attempt to inflict emotional trauma on their partners.”
According to Childline Botswana, the senseless killings of children highlight the dire situation facing some families and underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address this worrying trend. The organization calls on all sectors of society, including government, civil society and communities, to take immediate and concerted action to address the root causes of this violence and protect the most vulnerable members of society.
“The family unit has been compromised in terms of nurturing and developing responsible citizens. A multi-pronged approach is needed to tackle this epidemic. All efforts need to be invested in building stronger families,” said Childline Botswana. It said strengthening the family unit is crucial, as is providing evidence-based interventions to support healthy family relationships and prevent such tragedies from occurring.
“We call on men to reflect deeply on these events and what they portray about men in Botswana. We call on men to urgently convene a ‘Men’s Conference’ to reflect on this shameful development in our country. Childline Botswana is committed to supporting any such community initiatives and will be reaching out to some communities where appropriate,” it said. It added: “We urge all community members to remain vigilant and report any signs of distress or potential danger to the relevant authorities. Together we can work towards creating a safer and more compassionate society for our children.”
