July 25, 2024 (SUKI) – Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said on Thursday it had captured the town of Suki in Sennar state, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of the state capital, but there was no immediate comment from the military.
The paramilitary RSF said in a statement late on Wednesday that its forces had taken full control of Suki and inflicted heavy losses on government forces, capturing dozens of soldiers.
The Sennar Youth Rally, an alliance of civil resistance committees, confirmed that the Rapid Support Forces had taken control of Suki.
Sources on the ground in agreement with the military said military forces had retreated to the outskirts of Suki and were struggling to regain control.
Fighting also took place in the Karadima region, north of Suki and southeast of the city of Sennar, on Thursday, local sources told Sudan Tribune.
The Sudanese army has not yet made an official comment on the RSF’s claims.
The capture of Suki means the Rapid Security Forces now control six of the seven districts of Sennar state, while the army controls only the city of Sennar.
In June, the Rapid Support Forces captured the strategic Jabal Moya region, extending their control over much of Sennar State, and subsequently advanced into Singa and several other towns.
Suki, located on the eastern bank of the Blue Nile, is the site of one of Sudan’s most important irrigation agriculture projects.
