Éric Rohmer’s film opens today – Hoje Macau

The film Conto de Verão, directed by the famous French director Éric Rohmer, will be screened at Paixão Cinema at 8pm this evening as part of the “TGIF – Friday Night Screenings” section. After the film, you can join the French wine tasting party with the sommelier.

In 1996, French director Éric Rohmer filmed A Summer’s Tale, part of a series of four films called A Tale of Four Seasons. It is a film that revolves around the ideas of presence and absence, desire and non-presence. The third film in the series can be seen today at the Cinemateca Paixão in Travessa da Paixão, near the ruins of São Paulo, as part of the “TGIF – Friday Night Screenings” section.

This is the story of Gaspard, who meets his girlfriend Lina when he goes on vacation to the seaside. While waiting for her to arrive, he meets his friends Margot and Solène, each of whom represents something that Gaspard admires: friendship, which Margot offers, and Solène, the passion and sensuality he seeks in a serious commitment with Gaspard. According to the film’s plot synopsis, Lina, as a true girlfriend, represents true love. But when she arrives at the agreed vacation location, the boy must choose between three women.

This is one of four “Stories of the Four Seasons” by the famous French director Eric Rohmer. Born in Nancy on April 4, 1920, Rohmer is considered one of the great figures of the so-called French “New Wave”, in addition to being a film director, film critic, screenwriter and journalist. He also edited the famous film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma.

He made his first short film, Journal d’un scélérat, in 1950, which won awards at the most prestigious international film festivals. Nine years later, he made his first feature film, Signo del León.

According to the director’s biography available on the streaming platform Filmin, “Eric Rohmer’s films are characterized by simplicity and intellectual acuity, a profound empathy for the circumstances in which the action takes place and for the characters that define the moral significance of each of his stories”.

In 1970, Rohmer was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film Not in the English Language for his feature film Mi Noche con Maud. The following year, the film was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

The “Story of Seasons” series began in 1990 and focuses on “relationships with love as the protagonist and deception as the protagonist.” The director is also the author of films such as “A Beautiful Wedding”, “Full Moon Night” and “The Pilot’s Woman”.
