The President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, officially handed over supplies and equipment to the health facility in Ouagadougou, Thursday, July 25, 2024. The equipment was purchased as part of the Covid-19 Preparedness and Response Project (covid-19 PPR) and the Primary Health Care Strengthening Project for Improved Health and Nutrition (PRSS-ASN).
The equipment officially handed over by the Head of State to health facilities in the 13 regions of Burkina Faso will undoubtedly strengthen the health system. The Covid-19 Preparedness and Response Project (covid-19 PPR), with the financial support of the World Bank, has purchased various equipment for the benefit of the Directorate of Health and Public Health, health zones and peripheral health centers. These equipment include 14 generators and 1,900 solar refrigerators, with the help of which vaccination services can be improved in the most remote areas. In fact, many children do not benefit from vaccines because some health centers do not have refrigerators to store them.
Faso President visits mobile clinic
With these solar refrigerators, all health centers in Burkina Faso will now have cold chain equipment to guarantee the quality of the vaccines administered to the population. 110 electric refrigerators and 13 refrigerated pickup trucks have also been purchased. These refrigerated trucks will help reduce the time it takes to distribute vaccines in the most remote areas of the country. Each region will now have a refrigerated truck to deliver vaccines to remote and sometimes isolated communities. PPR-covid-19 has also purchased 11 pickup trucks and Prado TCL station wagons, 11 cold rooms and 835 tablets, which will be used to enter vaccination data and will help improve reporting systems at the national level.
The total cost of the equipment was One Hundred Four Hundred Six Hundred and Two Hundred and Four Hundred and Ninety (14,162,245,590) FCFA, half of which was a donation and the other half was a loan.
Acquired 15 mobile clinics to make healthcare more accessible to people living far from medical facilities
Women’s health, a top priority
The equipment acquired as part of the PPR-covid-19 was not the only equipment handed over by Captain Ibrahim Traoré. During the ceremony, the Head of State handed over 15 mobile clinics acquired through the Strengthening Primary Health Care for Better Health and Nutrition Project (PRSS-ASN) to 15 health institutions and workers’ health offices. These mobile clinics are the first experience of their kind and are part of the healthcare delivery strategy desired by the Government of Burkina Faso, which includes providing primary and specialist care to people far from large hospitals and in poverty, especially in cases of responsible female cancers.
This will include deploying mobile clinics in villages, rural areas and certain remote areas of cities to enable people in these areas to undergo ultrasound scans, screen for cervical and breast cancer, and take care of children.
They are equipped with specialized nursing equipment: mammogram machines, ultrasound machines, colposcopes, etc. As well as other primary health care equipment: foldable steel tents, detachable folding examination beds, small operating boxes, battery-powered otoscopes, medical and obstetric stethoscopes, pediatric and adult blood pressure monitors, etc.
Solar-powered refrigerators for better vaccine storage to be sent to the country’s most remote health centers
Each mobile clinic has three medical areas and a technical room: a reception and orientation area for clients, a mammography area equipped with a mammography device and an integrated Smart FINEDER biopsy device, and a gynecological consultation area equipped with an ultrasound machine, a colposcope and diagnostic equipment for the treatment of precancerous lesions of the cervix. The mobile clinic includes two water tanks of 200 liters each, one for clean water and the other for collecting wastewater. It is also equipped with a generator with a capacity of 34 KVA.
Each mobile clinic is equipped with a 4×6 meter foldable tent and provides nutrition, family planning counseling and HIV testing, vaccinations and pediatric services, thereby increasing the mobile clinic’s capacity to provide care and services.
The health facilities that benefited from these mobile clinics also received operating subsidies. Thus, 160 million FCFA were available to the 15 Public Health Establishments (EPS), or an average of 10,500,000 FCFA per EPS per year for the operation of each mobile clinic.
The Faso president stressed that his goal is for every Burkinabe to have access to care, wherever they are.
The acquisition, maintenance and operation of these mobile clinics for the first year were financed by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) with a total of FCFA 5,612,518,633, including a loan of FCFA 3,648,137,111 and a donation of FCFA 1 964,381,522. The State of Burkina Faso provided a contribution of FCFA 235,000,000 per year for the maintenance and operation of the mobile clinics from the second year onwards and repaid the loan of FCFA 3,648,137,111.
The Faso President expressed his satisfaction with the equipment, which will bring health services closer to the most vulnerable. “Our vision is to be able to provide health to Burkina Faso people, wherever they are,” declared Captain Ibrahim Traoré. He took the opportunity to invite people to fight malaria during the winter months when the disease is rampant, clean up their living environment, clean the areas around drains to let rainwater flow away, and sleep under long-lasting mosquito nets. .
Minister of Health and Public Health Dr. Robert Kargougou is pleased that the equipment will strengthen the health system and invites healthcare providers to make full use of it.
