Jakarta: Security guards in Bali have seized hundreds of skewers and dozens of kilograms of raw dog meat on the Indonesian resort island where the dog meat trade is illegal, officials said on Thursday.
The tourist hotspot banned the dog meat trade last year, with offenders facing up to three months in prison or a fine of up to 50 million rupiah ($3,064), but the trade still exists in other parts of the country.
Dewa Nyoman Rai Dharmadi, head of Bali’s public order agency, told AFP that authorities found three dog meat traders still operating in violation of local regulations during inspections this week.
They seized 500 skewers of dog meat from a seller in Jembrana area and 56 kg of raw dog meat from another seller in the same area.
The dog meat satay seller was only given a warning as he had not been caught selling dog meat satay before, while the other two sellers were considered repeat offenders and received minor criminal charges in the local court.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority said authorities were only pursuing minor criminal cases against repeat offenders because they wanted to give dog meat sellers a chance to reform.
“We will not take sudden legal action, but we will give them a chance to understand the ban and the reasons for it,” DEWA said.
“But we deal with recurring sellers as a deterrent. We are not kidding.”
The two sellers are due to go on trial next month.
Indonesia is one of the few countries that still allows the sale of dog and cat meat, but the movement against the practice is gaining ground, with some cities including Semarang on Java island implementing local bans on the trade in recent years.
