A Cambodian court has found opposition politician Teav Vannol guilty of defamation and fined him $1.5 million for comments he made in foreign media about the state of democracy in the country, Human Rights Watch said.

In February, Candlelight Party chairman Van Noor told Nikkei that democracy in the Southeast Asian country had deteriorated during the administration of Hun Manet, the son of longtime leader Hun Sen who came to power last year.

The Candlelight Party was banned from participating in last year’s general election, which saw the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, led by Hun Sen, win a landslide victory.
