Most importantly, she’s showing what drives people like her to take up this extreme sport, and it mostly comes down to wanting to live a meaningful life. But Lakpa’s goal isn’t fame, it’s to pave a path to a better future for herself and her children. “I want to be a celebrity. I want to do good things,” she says. “I want to show my two daughters how to be brave.”
Skywalker: A Love StoryDirected by Jeff Zimbalist, it’s about a different kind of climbing. (It’s not about Star Wars.As the subtitle suggests, this is the love story of Angela Nicola and Ivan Bilkus, two Russian “roof climbers” who became famous in 2015 for scaling super-tall buildings and construction sites and posting photos from the top to Instagram. (Of course, this is highly illegal, which is part of the thrill.)
Both are loners who initially worked alone, treating rooftop climbing as an art. Some rooftop climbers do it for the stunts and fame, but Nicola and Bilkus were drawn to the prospect of seeing the cityscapes from a sky-high perspective, and perhaps adding beauty to them. Nicola is a trained gymnast, and her Instagram photos often show her striking dancer’s poses; when Bilkus joined her, they fell in love, and he became part of the art.
Skywalker The film follows the couple’s climb over the years, as they gain fame with each new feat. There are plenty of breathtaking shots of buildings from around the world. But it’s primarily about their love story, and the way they learned to trust and care for each other, reflecting how love develops and perseveres during tough times. That’s part of art, too.
