Vietnam Water Corporation has officially signed a contract with China Jiangxi International Corporation for the expansion and upgrade of the Otapi water treatment plant.

The project, worth about N123.2 million, is aimed at meeting the growing water demand in the town and its environs. NamWater project management head Timothy Silombela said the handover of the site is expected to take place next week and the project duration is 16 months.

The water company’s chief executive, Abraham Nehemia, stressed the importance of the project, especially considering the current reliance of the four central and northern districts on a single water source, the Kalueke Canal.

Detailing the work being done in the Ohangana region, he said: “Our projects focus on developing the Ohangana 2 aquifer to provide an additional source of water and reduce reliance on the canal. However, the western part of the region faces major challenges in terms of capacity and water quality. This requires the expansion or replacement of treatment plants in Olushanga, Otapi, Ongongo and Oshakati.”

Water shortage

Nehemia stressed that the Otapi project is urgent due to the severe water shortage during the dry season. “During the drought, complaints were distressing in the Umba Arantu area, especially that the existing water plant often operated at maximum capacity and sometimes even broke down. This project is crucial, but we must also address the canal that will supply water to the water plant. We have completed the canal section between the border and Olusanja and will continue from Olusanja to Otapi to ensure that there is enough water for treatment and distribution when the water plant is completed,” he said.

In the past few weeks, Namibia Water Corporation has launched several major projects, including the extension and upgrading of pipelines in Ondangwa, Nhana and Rundu, with a total investment of N$1 billion.

NamWater Public Relations Director Lot Ndamanomhata said: “The Ondangwa-Omutsegonime pipeline replacement project is worth N91 million, the Ohangwena II Wellfield Water Supply Scheme project in Eenhana is worth N250 million and the Rundu Water Treatment Plant Expansion and Related Works project is worth N655 million.”

Commitment to Excellence

China Jiangxi International, in partnership with Namibian contractor Homefin Properties, won the bid for the Outapi project. Ouyang Fenfen, business manager of China Jiangxi International, expressed gratitude for the trust the company has received. “We are committed to delivering the project within the stipulated time and with excellent quality.”

The company has been active in Namibia for over 20 years and recently worked with Homefin Properties to complete the Ondangwa-Omutsegonime pipeline replacement project which started last month.
