The exhibition by renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei at the Hirschhorn Museum in Washington features portraits of dissidents from 30 countries, including Belarusians Ales Bialiatski, a human rights activist, and Nikolai Statkevich, a politician.

To create this exhibition, Ai Weiwei used an unusual technique. Each portrait is made of thousands of plastic Lego bricks, assembled by hand and laid out on the floor (more than 1.2 million bricks in total). The choice of this material is not accidental: according to the artist, persecution based on political beliefs is as common in the world as children’s building blocks.
Ai Weiwei himself spent about three months in prison in 2011 for criticizing Chinese authorities and was unable to leave the country for years. His project, Trace, is dedicated to people who have gone through similar experiences.
The portraits resemble photographs taken by surveillance systems or during law enforcement arrests. The color palette of the paintings is dominated by the colors of the flag of one or another dissident country. So, for the portraits of Ales Byalyatsky and Nikolai

The exhibition will run until January 1, 2018.
