On Friday, Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka proposed a series of stricter procedures for refugees acting illegally.
Under the minister’s proposal, refugees who hide their identity or do not leave the country when deported would be sentenced to prison.
According to the reasoning, they want to show in this way that deceiving the authorities is not one of the lesser crimes. With the tightening of the package of measures, I hope to prevent refugees from providing false identity data and hope that their asylum applications will be evaluated more favorably.
Anyone who gives authorities a false nationality could be fined between €1,000 and €1,500 or jailed for three weeks. Anyone who falsifies documents will be prosecuted.
People whose asylum applications are rejected can be fined between €5,000 and €15,000 or jailed for six weeks if they do not leave the country or re-enter. If they break the rules multiple times, they can be banned immediately. They will also speed up the asylum application process for criminal refugees.
Once approved, the tightened procedures could take effect in spring 2017.
