My comments on the AP article:
—”Former Russian security agentI have clarified many times that “1988-1991: Worked as a civilian translator and foreign language instructor at the Independent Training Center of the KGB’s First Directorate (Intelligence Directorate, now the SVR). The center was also known as Balashikha-2″
—“Escaped to Europe in 1995“:This is a mistake. Since the end of April 1999, I have stopped returning to Russia for security reasons. Since 1993, I have lived permanently and legally in the West.
—“Under police protection in France” – To my knowledge, this is not true, and I made this clear in my conversation with AP. (Perhaps AP knows the situation better than I do? 🙂)

… Others expressed concern that it would go unpunished, as happened with the killings of several Kremlin critics who sought to expose human rights abuses and wrongdoing by the Russian government — their killings sparked accusations of official involvement.

“The people who ordered (the murder) are the same people who murdered Litvinenko, Politkovskaya, Shekochikhin and others.” Former Russian security agent Yevgeny LimarevWitnesses in the Litvinenko case Escaped to Europe in 1995“The list is long,” he said in emailed comments.

Yuri Shcherchikhin, who investigated allegations of high-level corruption for Novaya Gazeta, died in 2003 after a brief mysterious illness. Colleagues believe he was poisoned, but no suspects have been arrested.

1. AP: Who do you think is most likely to have committed this crime?
My answer: One of many “ultra-patriotic”/nationalist groups, part of the siloviki faction, with close ties to Russia’s most prominent security agencies (FSB and SVR).

2. AP: So what’s the motivation?
My answer: Political motive: to eliminate the “complete enemies of Great Russia”.

3. AP: Three common possible motives are: Budanov, Bechtorv, and neo-Nazis.

My answer: Budanov + Beketov + cooperation with Novaya Gazeta are the most obvious and common reasons why Markelov became an “ultrapatriot” / “enemy of the state” by siloviki. The latest developments in the Budanov case and Markelov’s active public position triggered the decision to assassinate.
I would bet that the person who planned and ordered the assassination was not a neo-Nazi, even though the killer looked like one.

4. AP: Any other comments?
My answer: It is the same person who ordered the murders of Litvinenko, Shekochikhin, Politkovskaya, Starovoitova… and the assassination of Chubais… – the list is very long.

— As a security expert, I followed this case closely and all my sources/competent interlocutors were 100% sure that this assassination was of a political nature.

AP: By the way, are you still under police protection?

My answer: As far as I know 🙂 — No. I guess some limited protection was organized during the Litvinenko case uproar in December 2006/early January 2007 (especially during the visit of Scotland Yard), but this protection definitely ended at the end of January 2007.
