French athlete Sankamba Sylla says she was banned from the opening ceremony of the Olympics because of her headscarf.
The French Olympic Committee, on the other hand, announced that it was working with her to find a solution.
Sylla will represent France in the mixed and women’s 4x400m relay events.
“You have been selected for the Olympics in your country but you can’t attend the opening ceremony because you are wearing a headscarf,” Sierra wrote on Instagram.
France has a strict principle of secularism and David Rappatern, president of the French Olympic Committee, said French Olympians were bound by the same secular principles that apply to French public sector workers.
“This may sometimes be incomprehensible in other countries around the world, but it is part of our French DNA,” he said.
Rappaten also said talks were ongoing with police to find a solution that complies with the secular demands of the French Olympic team while respecting “the legitimate desire of athletes to have their own beliefs respected.”
“I have no doubt that a solution will be found. We want everyone to be able to attend the opening ceremony,” he added.
