Pickleball, a sport first introduced in Papua New Guinea, has been launched in Lae and is gaining traction.
Lae Pickleball Competition Coordinator Dennis Sito revealed that the interest in the sport is still growing even though the competition has not officially started.
Mr Sito said the club has only been in existence for a month and as a new sport they are still in the early stages of development and are working hard to grow and gain recognition.
“The amount of attention that the movement has received on social media has exceeded their expectations because the attention and support that they have received in the early stages has been incredible,” Sito said.
Mr Sito said they are currently working with Lae Golf Club to introduce a new sport to club members, with introductory tournaments being held every Sunday from 4pm to 6pm for members to participate.
“Our goal was to introduce a new sport that would be suitable for players of all ages and skill levels, and to have simple rules that would make it a great introduction to the sport,” Sito said.
He said the bigger plan for hosting the tournament is to look forward to connecting with more passionate people who love the sport.
Mr Sito hopes they can work towards raising awareness and participation in various regions across the country, eventually organising a national competition.
“I have started a regular corporate competition at Lae Golf Club which so far has been supported by Boroko Motors, with Lae Golf Club partnering with Ramu Sugar and Lae Biscuits to provide merchandise as prizes for the tournament,” Sito said.
