Why do you have to leave your suitcase in the hotel bathroom?

So far we’ve discussed what bed bugs like, but you know what they don’t like? Bathtubs. Camping out in an area that frequently floods isn’t a recipe for survival for these blood-sucking parasites, so if you leave your luggage in the bathtub – you’re making it hard for them to come home with you.

But don’t just take our word for it. Check out what experts in the field have to say: “Travelers should avoid placing their luggage on cushioned surfaces or beds upon arrival at their destination, as bed bugs are commonly found inside mattresses, furniture, and upholstery.” Brittany Campbell, Ph.D., entomologist, National Pest Management Association staff explains (National Drug Administration).

Because they are less likely to make it into the bathroom, it’s the safest place to store your luggage when you’re in a hotel, Campbell says. You can place your suitcases in the bathroom while you thoroughly check the room for bed bugs, or leave them in the bathroom during your stay, she explains. Just remember to remove them before turning on the water in the shower. This could end very badly.
