CEBU CITY, Philippines — A 26-year-old man was jailed on Monday, July 22, for allegedly stealing belongings from his uncle three times in Poblacion Village, Pardo District, Cebu City, because he loved playing an online gambling game called “scatter.”
The suspect reportedly attempted the theft three times and reported himself to authorities on his third attempt.
The person arrested was identified as Clark Menguito, 26, who is unemployed.
Meanwhile, the complainant is his 62-year-old uncle, with whom the suspect lives.
While the victim was sleeping, Menguito reportedly tried to steal money from his pants pocket.
In an interview with local radio station DYHP RMN CEBU, the suspect reportedly admitted that he stole P2,500 from his uncle to play the online gambling game “scatter.”
The suspect allegedly stated that he would eventually return the stolen money; however, he was addicted to the game.
According to police, the complainant said the suspect had committed theft three times.
The third time, the victim decided to file a lawsuit against Menguito as punishment and to teach him a lesson.
Police added that the suspect was motivated to steal because he was addicted to the “scatter” game and had no more money to spend on online gambling.
As of this writing, the suspect is being detained at the Inayawan police station detention facility.
The victim is scheduled to file a theft complaint on Wednesday, July 24.
