A woman has been accused of posing as a licensed massage therapist and acupuncturist and collecting $37,000 from unsuspecting clients over a four-year period.
Halton Regional Police said they began an identity fraud investigation in January and learned the woman had obtained the registration numbers of actual licensed massage therapists and used them.
“After receiving payment for her services, she provided these registration numbers to her clients so that they could submit invoices to their respective insurance companies,” police said. At a press conference on Wednesday.
Investigators also found that the woman was suspected of providing other treatments such as physical therapy and acupuncture without a license.
Police said the woman provided services at the home and sometimes as a mobile service, earning $37,000 over four years.
On Wednesday, investigators identified the suspect as Mahvish Ahmed, 49. She was arrested and charged with 13 counts of identity fraud, one count of fraud over $5,000 and one count of fraud under $5,000.
Police said Ahmed has been bailed and will appear in Milton court on August 26.
