23 July 2024 (Khartoum) – The deteriorating food situation in Sudan is extremely worrying, with nearly 26 million people in Sudan suffering from severe hunger, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
Stephane Dujarric, the official spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stressed that 750,000 people are just one step away from famine, equivalent to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification 5 (IPC5).
He told reporters on Tuesday that rising food prices, difficulties in accessing food and the impact of the conflict have exacerbated people’s difficulties in obtaining food.
Last month, local food prices rose 16% from May.
“It is also 120% higher than last June,” Dujarric commented.
“With the onset of the rainy season, people’s plight will only worsen. The Tine border crossing, which is used to transport goods from Chad to Sudan’s Darfur region, is currently impassable due to heavy rains and flooding,” he added.
Many roads in southern Sudan have also become impassable, according to the United Nations, with people fearing the worst.
“The humanitarian community in Sudan urgently needs access to assistance through all possible avenues to avoid a further deterioration of the situation,” Dujarric stressed, adding that only 30 per cent of humanitarian aid funding was available in Sudan.
Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed thousands since it broke out in mid-April last year.
According to the United Nations, more than 26 million people are in urgent need of assistance and face food shortages, and more than 10 million civilians are internally displaced.
