First captive hatchling brings hope to Cambodia’s endangered black pond turtle

The first black marsh turtle hatched in captivity in Cambodia is being carefully raised by conservationists until it is released into the wild as part of a program to restore populations of the endangered reptile.

The baby turtle’s parents were rescued from the black market and hatched at the Angkor Center for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) in late May.

The tiny reptile, which measures just 6 centimeters (2 inches) long and weighs about 40 grams (1.4 ounces), is expected to remain at the reserve until it grows large enough to be less vulnerable to predators, ACCB national director Christel Griffioen said.
