MEMPHIS, Tenn. (LPL) – A tragic incident occurred at a public library, causing the library to be closed for a week, according to a statement from authorities.
On Monday, July 22, as a fundraiser called “Library Love Forever” was about to begin, a man jumped from the library lobby upstairs.
The person involved died in the incident, and police are investigating the details. The library authorities issued a statement to the public:
“A situation at the Benjamin Hooks Central Library caused the branch to be closed this morning.
This is a tragic and heartbreaking incident that illustrates the importance of mental health care in our community. The Benjamin L. Hooks Library will be closed until Monday, July 29 to allow our library staff and community to process and have time to access mental health and wellness resources, including grief counselors.”
All other Memphis Public Library branches will remain open to the public.
