The nursery, in the Auteuil district of Dumbéa, has reopened after being closed for weeks due to blockages and looting. It lost more than half its clientele due to the unrest.

“At first, we considered leaving her in this daycare that worked for my daughter. But unfortunately, the longer it went on, the more complicated the back and forth became. We found a building in the South Side with the same mindset.”, attests Gauthier Chenaud.
The Auteuil daycare centre has lost 58% of its clients since May 13, with 30% citing insecurity and 28% due to job loss or permanent departure.We were put on standby to deal with the difficulties and domino effects. Some employees are on partial unemployment, and 19 of the 42 employees have returned. Those who are there are working 4 to 5 hours a day, and we are allocating time for everyone to work” explains Claudia Jeandot, co-director of the nursery.
The situation was difficult for the employee, who had been with the company since it opened in 2012.We are sad, angry, and we work hard for ourselves and our families. If I lose my job, I lose everything, and then I go back to the island, where there is not much work.“, she explained.
Despite weeks of closures, invasions and vandalism, the structure has remained intact thanks to the team’s determination and optimism. It has also benefited from assistance from the national and southern provinces.”We are a little worried about the fact that families are leaving, but there are also people arriving. Yesterday, a gendarme family registered their children. If the situation is stable and safe, we are hopeful.” Claudia Jeandeau concluded.
