All India Radio (AIR) has announced to expand its news content on FM Rainbow channel in an effort to expand its listener base. Unlike private operators who are restricted from broadcasting news, AIR is using this strategy to attract more listeners.

FM Rainbow (formerly known as AIR FM I) will gradually increase its news content while maintaining the short, two-minute show format. The channel has expanded its local language news broadcasts in five cities. In Kolkata, the frequency of news has been increased from once a day to 18 times. Chennai will now air news 18 times a day, compared to twice previously. Mumbai has also seen a significant increase, now airing news segments 15 times a day, compared to once previously. In Panaji (Goa) and Hyderabad, news will be broadcast in 10 and 7 time zones respectively.

The news service has been launched in Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu) and Cuttack (Odisha) today. Tiruchirappalli will broadcast news seven times a day, while Cuttack will broadcast news six times a day.

“Through the two-minute local language news show format, we are targeting the audience in the age group of 18-35 years. We plan to further expand the exposure of news content on our selected FM stations,” said a senior AIR official.

FM Rainbow currently operates in 13 cities including Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Delhi, Jalandhar, Kodaikanal and Lucknow.
