An important meeting was held on July 22 at the Royal Palace of Amohisorohitra in Madagascar between the President of the Republic of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, and the President of the Regional Council of Réunion, Huguette Bello. The meeting stressed the importance of bilateral relations and strengthening cooperation, as well as the historical and cultural ties that unite the two territories.
The discussion quickly turned pragmatic, focusing on Madagascar’s vast economic potential. The Regional Council President described the Big Island as “the breadbasket of the entire Indian Ocean region,” highlighting its natural wealth. The two officials’ discussions focused on developing joint development actions in key areas such as health, education, training and the blue economy.
Particular emphasis was placed on the need to promote sustainable development and renewable energy, areas in which Madagascar and Reunion could strengthen cooperation. In this regard, President Rajoelina shared information on the National Plan to Promote Family Planning, a strategic initiative aimed at improving the well-being of Madagascar’s 28 million inhabitants. Ms. Bello welcomed this initiative and expressed support for these steps, which are essential for the development of society.
In addition to the exchange of views, Huguet Bello proposed that President Rajoelina pay a state visit to Reunion Island. This visit could lead to the signing of an ambitious bilateral cooperation agreement that would include the exchange of professors in the field of higher education, as well as strengthening the skills of public health teachers. The arrival of French university professors in Madagascar is also seen as a means of enriching academic exchanges between the two islands.
The President of the Reunion region also spoke with pride of the common roots between Madagascar and Reunion Island, recalling that the population of Reunion Island was largely influenced by people from the larger island of Fort Dauphin. These shared cultural elements form a solid foundation for the development of cooperation projects between the two sides.
