July 22, 2024 (Port Sudan) – A ship carrying more than 2,400 tons of humanitarian aid has arrived in Sudan from Turkey as part of efforts to address the dire situation.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Committee said the items included food, hygiene products, clothing, shelter materials and medical supplies.
The cargo was formally handed over to Sudanese authorities on Monday.
According to a statement issued on Monday, the aid packages include 1,986 tons of food, 160 tons of medicines and medical equipment, 128 tons of clothing, 90 tons of hygiene products, 44 tons of blankets and various shelter materials.
The situation in war-torn Sudan continues to deteriorate, with women, children and even entire families forced to flee violence, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The agency noted that Sudan is currently facing its worst food shortage in 20 years.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says one in five people in Sudan faces emergency levels of food insecurity amid the ongoing conflict.
“755,000 people face catastrophic hunger and 25.6 million people face acute hunger,” said WHO Executive Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Sudan is one of the worst places in the world for children, with millions of them continuing to suffer from severe food insecurity and disease, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
In addition, millions of Sudanese children are malnourished and unable to go to school.
Last week, aid agency the International Rescue Committee (IRC) said nearly half of the country needed humanitarian assistance due to the ongoing war, while up to 3 million people remained on the brink of famine and at risk of dying of hunger.
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), more than 8 million people have been displaced since the conflict between the Sudanese Army (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out in mid-April 2023.
The country’s healthcare system has reportedly collapsed.
