Muscat: Technology has become so integrated into every aspect of life that one has to wonder how beneficial it is to have it everywhere. The pervasive presence of technology in every institution underscores its importance. This integration of technology has enhanced the level of protection, transcending traditional measures and addressing safety and work-related issues.
Lieutenant Colonel Omair bin Abdulaziz al Rawahi, Director of the Security Police Department of the General Operations Directorate, stressed the importance of surveillance cameras in providing self-security to buildings and facilities, especially those managed by professional companies.
These cameras play a vital role in preventing damage and assisting investigations by tracking crime and identifying genetic clues.
He further explained that the type of cameras used in various models are directly related to interesting security issues and the discovery of crimes and related facts.
The deployment of surveillance cameras has led to significant changes in internal and external teams, such as reducing the number of security personnel and thus reducing security costs.
This reduction helps reduce risks such as vandalism and theft. In addition, surveillance cameras are very useful in emergency situations, showing detailed information about the site, surrounding factors, and assisting in rescue operations. They allow for cost-effective measures and facilitate movement from one site to another.

Cameras and systems have become important tools in investigations, providing data, evidence and audio-visual material that are essential to support investigations, evidence commissions and crime detection. These tools also play an important role in deterring crime and illegal activity. Surveillance cameras can monitor movement and traffic, detect illegal behavior, and help study the causes and factors that lead to traffic problems, supporting the design of better solutions.
Lt. Col. Omair al Rawahi stressed that the technical specifications and security requirements for installing surveillance cameras vary depending on the building, era and site details. Important features include the system’s height, night vision or thermal vision capabilities and adaptability to different climatic conditions. Users must be experienced and able to quickly resolve any malfunctions, whether routine or minor.
He also pointed out that cameras could be misused for blackmail and bullying, and stressed that Omani laws, such as the Information Technology Crimes Law and Royal Decree No. 12/2011, criminalize privacy violations and protect individuals’ private lives.
