The 2024 British Caribbean Insurance Company (BCIC) Barbados Rally got underway under the floodlights at Bushy Park in St Philip on Friday evening, but one key participant was left without the race when the team of Roger Mayers and Barry Ward had to withdraw due to engine problems.

Two-time rally champion and favourite for the title, Dane Skeete, took the lead in the event, but minutes later Ford Fiesta WRC driver Daniel Hiorns and co-driver Josh Beer became the first casualties of the 2024 race when they came to a stop a few bends into the stage.

Most drivers were just thinking about getting through the line while trying to get into the lead early on. However, Skeete had a rough start due to two stalls, but the R5 has certainly had a great start so far.

Skoda R5 drivers Stuart Maloney and Mark Maloney and Ford driver Adam Mallalieu each won a stage, but the Maloneys and Jamaica’s Jeffrey Panton filled the top three.

They and any surviving competitors will compete over nine stages on Saturday, heading to the southeast of the island to restart at Bushy Park at 10 a.m. (SW)
