Davis Snyder hit a two-run homer in the 14th inning to help the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 on Friday at Rogers Centre.
With Cavan Biggio on base as an automatic base runner, right-hander Kyle Nicolas got outs on ground balls to Ernie Clement and Kevin Kiermaier.
That set the stage for Schneider, who hit his seventh home run of the season on the first pitch.
Relief pitcher Genesis Cabrera (2-1) retired all five batters he faced, helping Toronto (27-29) extend its winning streak to four games.
Andrew McCutchen and Nick Gonzalez each had two hits for Pittsburgh (26-31).
After a scoreless 10th inning, both teams scored in the 11th and 12th innings.
George Springer made a spectacular diving catch on a Bryan Reynolds hit, and Pittsburgh’s Ji Hwan Bae made it 2-1 on a sacrifice fly. Springer then hit a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th to score Danny Jansen.
In the 12th inning, Connor Joe’s sacrifice fly gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead, but Cavan Biggio scored on Kevin Kiermaier’s sacrifice fly to give Toronto a run.
The Blue Jays had the bases loaded in the 13th inning, but Carmen Mlodzinski caught Biggio’s ball to end an eight-pitch run.
Toronto starter Jose Berrios allowed one run on six hits in seven innings. He struck out five and lowered his ERA to 2.78.
Pirates left-hander Bailey Falter held the Blue Jays scoreless over six innings, allowing only a single to Ernie Clement in the third and a single to Kiermaier in the sixth.
The Pirates scored their first run in the fifth inning on consecutive hits from Berrios and a single from McCutchen that sent Gonzalez home.
Falter retired nine batters in a row before Kiermaier reached base. The speedy outfielder stole a base, Jansen drew a walk, but Vladimir Guerrero II struck out, leaving two in trouble.
Toronto scored in the seventh inning when Bae threw a pitch by Daniel Vogelbach into the night air. The ball bounced off the center field wall and Springer, with two outs, ran home from first base to score.
Chad Green pitched for Toronto in the eighth. The Blue Jays attacked with two runners on base in the bottom half, but Joe made a beautiful sliding catch on a ball from Bo Bichette to keep the score tied.
In the ninth, Yimi Garcia walked Oneil Cruz, but he was later hit by Jansen as he passed over the bases. Guerrero caught the pitch with a single jump and put the tag on his helmet.
Cruz was initially ruled a safe out, but that decision was overturned after the Blue Jays challenged the ruling.
Toronto is in last place in the American League East, one game behind the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.
The published attendance was 33,356 and the race took 3 hours and 46 minutes.
Manoa is out
Earlier in the day, Toronto starting pitcher Alec Manoa was placed on the 15-day injured list with a sprained right elbow.
The move is retroactive to Thursday. The Blue Jays also acquired relief pitcher Ryan Burr from the Philadelphia Phillies for cash and designated right-hander Joel Kuhnel for assignment.
New arrivals
The Blue Jays wore their new uniforms for the first time after launching the new City Connect uniforms the night before.
The “Night Mode” jerseys feature a dark background with the city name and skyline printed on the front. The team will wear these jerseys in 15 night home games this season.
Joey Bat
Former Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista took batting practice before the game and caught some fly balls.
Batista, who was drafted by the Buccaneers with the 599th overall pick in 2000, made a few promotional appearances on the day as part of the City Connect uniform launch.
Next Steps
Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (2-4, 3.25 ERA) was scheduled to pitch for the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon against right-hander Mitch Keller (6-3, 3.59).
The three-game series will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
