In the first half of this year, police detected 21,243 illegal border crossings, compared with 20,555 in the same period last year. Syrian citizens received the most treatment, up tenfold from the previous year, accounting for more than a third of all cases. They were followed by Afghan and Turkish citizens.
The Maribor administration, from the statistics on illegal immigration published by the police, shows that in the six months of 2024, the Novi Sad police station was the busiest, recording 83% (17,631) of all unauthorized border crossings. 1,197 cases were recorded, Koper 977 cases, and Ljubljana police and administration recorded 655 cases.
In the first half of the year, 20,445 migrants declared their intention to apply for international protection, which is also slightly higher than the same period last year (19,450). So far this year, the largest number of such citizens came from Syria, but most of them left Slovenia shortly afterwards.
By the end of June this year, the police had investigated 285 cases of illegal immigration (162 in the same period last year), arrested 318 people smugglers (313 foreigners and 5 Slovenian citizens) and 1,780 migrants who crossed the border illegally. The courts ordered the detention of 291 smugglers.
