Barbados wins U19 Rising Stars Championship with first-set win over Jamaica

Kingston, St. Vincent – Barbados West Indies The United States and Jamaica ended in a tie in the final of the two-day under-19 tournament at the Arnosville Sports Arena on Sunday.

From the final day of play, the two sides were evenly matched, with Barbados effectively restricting Jamaica to 8-127 and then batting hard for the rest of the match, eventually finishing with 2-172 in the second innings and sealing the win based on the first innings score.

Opening batsmen Kyle Jordan and Joshua Morris both scored half-centuries, scoring 62 and 52 respectively, as they put together a solid partnership of 96 runs for the first wicket, ensuring there was no drama late in the match.

On the first day, Barbados opened with 9-2 and a score of 200. On the final day, Jamaica opened with 2-72, but their run was soon broken as they lost 6 wickets and scored only 39 runs.

Steve Wedderburn continued on with 39 but was unable to add to his overnight score, being bowled by a long ball from fast bowler Jatario Prescod (3-51) in the first over of the day. Jamaica suffered another setback when Wedderburn’s overnight partner Matthew Morgan was bowled by a brilliant curveball from leg-spinner Saurav Worrell (3-24) and added just five runs to his 28-run total.

As wickets continued to fall, Jamaica declared the end of the match before lunch, trailing Barbados by 73 runs in the first innings.

Barbados subsequently took control

Barbados then took control of the match. Jordan faced 132 balls and hit three fours and two sixes, while Morris hit six fours in 95 deliveries to wrench the Jamaican bowlers to their knees.

Later in the day, Morris was bowled out by a wide delivery from batsman Tamari Redwood, ending his batting career. Joshua Dorne (29 not out) then joined forces with Jordan to add 40 runs for the second wicket before linking up with Zion Brathwaite (22 not out) for 36 runs to ensure Barbados retained their lead.

The Barbadian team won the match with a solid performance and strategic play, and won the coveted U19 Rising Star title, which is a major achievement for the team and its supporters.
