CNS: Three American men, Dave Obaseki, Michael Capers and Sean Luke, were recently sentenced to 18 months in prison each after they pleaded guilty to using stolen credit card information to fraudulently purchase 73 items in Grand Cayman. The RCIPS said the affected businesses have either returned the seized items or have been issued restitution orders.
The three men, aged 32, 32 and 33, were arrested on Tuesday, March 19, for allegedly using their credit cards to make fraudulent purchases totalling more than CI$50,000. They were subsequently charged with three counts of obtaining property by deception.
After arresting them, the police searched the premises of the men and seized several items including expensive jewelry, perfumes and electronic gadgets like iPads and iPhones.
The convictions and sentencing of the two men followed a multi-faceted investigation led by the Royal Canadian Invasion Protection Service’s Financial Crime Investigation Unit (FCIU), which included coordination with international partners to identify overseas victims whose credit card information had been stolen.
“We would like to express our special thanks to everyone who assisted with the investigation, from our international partners to the frontline officers who responded to the initial report to our colleagues at the Digital Forensics Centre and the Cayman Islands Financial Investigation Agency,” said Detective Inspector Nevron Bradshaw of the Cayman Islands Financial Investigation Agency.
“We are particularly grateful to the employees of the affected businesses who were willing to work with us and provide the necessary evidence. Their assistance was critical in enabling us to quickly advance the investigation so that charges could be brought promptly and strong evidence could be provided to lead to a guilty plea. This outcome sends a message that this type of activity will not be tolerated in the Cayman Islands,” he added.
