A West Coast landmark and town will retain its spelling error for more than a century after plans to correct it were scrapped.
Franz Josef Glacier was named in 1866 by geologist and Canterbury Museum founder Julius von Haast after the then Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph.
The incorrect spellings creep in over time and persist.
In November 2023, the New Zealand Geographic Council began consulting on plans for remedial measures and correcting the spelling.
Land Information Minister Chris Penk decided to maintain the status quo after considering the proposals and comments.
This means they will retain their official dual names – Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere for the glacier and Franz Josef/Waiau for the village.
“The community noted that changing the spelling of this busy tourist center would further impact economic recovery,” Penk said.
