The new Deputy Mayor of Blantyre, Isaac Jomo Osman, has pledged to prioritise the welfare of street children, drawing on his own experience as a former street child.
Osman, who is the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Ntopwa ward councillor, defeated UTM’s Fane Baraba Kanogelela and DPP’s Gerald Lipikwe to be elected and sworn in as the municipality’s second top chief.
Osman was born in Mangochi in 1982 and left his village for Blantyre when he was in grade six in search of better opportunities in the city.
However, he found himself living on the streets, sleeping under bridges and benches, and doing odd jobs to make ends meet.
Despite the challenges, Ousmane’s determination and business acumen helped him rise from the streets to become a successful entrepreneur and owner of Ntopwa Football Club.
His rags-to-riches story has inspired many and he hopes to use his platform to make a difference in the lives of street children.
As deputy mayor, Osman plans to focus on initiatives to support and help street children, providing them with access to education, healthcare and skills training.
“I know how they feel, and I want to help them overcome the difficulties I faced,” Osman said in an interview.
“I believe every child should have the opportunity to succeed, and I am committed to making that happen.”
Osman’s personal story is a testament to his resilience and determination.
Despite having no formal education, he earned a master’s degree in education through private tutors and became a successful businessman and politician.
His charitable work in Ntopwa Township, especially his support for the elderly and the poor, earned him the respect and admiration of the community.
As the “Blantyre 2”, Ousmane hopes to inspire a new generation of leaders, make a positive impact on the lives of street children, and prove that with hard work and determination, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their dreams.
