ZAGREB, Croatia, July 22 (AP): Croatian police said an attacker broke into a retirement home in central Croatia on Monday, killing and injuring several people. Media reports said five people were killed.
Five people died on the spot while others were still receiving medical assistance, the Index news portal said. The suspect reportedly fled the scene but police soon caught him at a cafe near the facility in Daruvar town.
Police said they were notified after 10 a.m. Monday that a man with a gun had killed and injured several people at the nursing home. The regional police department said in a statement that the suspect “has been placed under police surveillance.”
N1 regional television reported that the gunman was born in 1973, fought in the 1991-1995 Croatian war and was a relative of an elderly person at the nursing home.
Daruvar is a spa town and municipality in Slavonia with a population of 8,500.
Authorities are investigating the motive for the attack.
