The Bjelovar-Bilogol police issued a brief announcement about the massacre in Daruvar.
“Today, July 22, at 10:10 a.m., the Belovar-Bilogol police station received a report that a man had used a gun to kill and injure several people in a home for the elderly and infirm.
“People connected to the crime are under police surveillance. This will be followed by an investigation at the scene of the incident, which will be led by a deputy of the Bjelovar regional prosecutor’s office,” the police said.
Retired military police?
According to unofficial sources, the murderer is a retired KP military policeman (51 years old), MojPortal reported.
Nenad Mrzlečki, director of the Institute of Emergency Medicine, told MojPortal that when staff from the emergency department in Daruvar arrived at the crime scene, they found four dead and four injured people, who were immediately taken to hospital.
“Three people were rushed to hospital in Paklači and one was taken to hospital in Virovica,” he said, adding that other minor injuries were reported.
An unprecedented tragedy took place this morning at a private home for the elderly and infirm in Daruwal, the Daruwal Municipality announced.
“We are shocked and in disbelief at this tragic incident at the Daruvar Nursing Home. We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. We are devastated by this unfortunate incident. The attacker has been caught. An investigation is underway,” the city announced on its official Facebook page.

The attacker was arrested.
An employee of a store in Daruvar told Dnevnik.hr how two employees of a nursing home rushed into his store, one of them was injured in the eye and the other was shot in the chest.
They told him a man came to the home and opened fire at users and employees.
“I nailed them all”
The store employee immediately called the emergency services and the police because the injured recognized the killer and saw him entering a nearby cafe. “I also called the police and told them where the killer was. He allegedly sat down and ordered a drink and then put the gun on the table,” a store employee told Dnevnik.hr.
He said of the killer that he was in his 50s and well known in the area, but did not say why he committed the crime.
A neighbour who was 80 metres from the home at the time said she heard gunshots every one to two minutes 24 hours later but initially thought it was construction work.
She added that neighbours told her the killer said, “Now I have killed them all” after sitting down at a nearby cafe.
