MCIT monitors local impact of CrowdStrike incident

Apia, 20 July 2024 – Following the CrowdStrike incident that affected Microsoft software and applications and caused global IT disruptions, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology informed the public that it is closely following this historic IT crisis.

The damage caused by the software update is widespread and serious, affecting a number of sectors including healthcare, media, finance, technology and local government. Samoa is one of the users of Microsoft, and some operating systems other than Linux and Apple may be affected.

This activity is not the result of a security incident or malicious network activity, but rather an IT issue.

The Ministry strongly advises IT personnel in all agencies to ensure that computer system files are restored and that backup storage of files and systems is always available in the event of a digital crisis. We will continue to monitor the latest developments in this incident and every response measure taken.

The incident was reported on Friday, July 19, 2024, affecting major services worldwide and causing severe disruption to services worldwide. The disruption to most Microsoft services was the result of a CrowdStrike software update.

While Microsoft has confirmed that several of its services experienced outages on the evening of July 18, these issues have since been resolved. Most of the current outages were caused by a software update released by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike for its popular network security tool Falcon.

It is understood that the software update issue only affected Microsoft Windows devices, causing many devices to fall into a loop of crashing and restarting, thus conflating two separate threads of activity.

CrowdStrike has reportedly released a fix that should successfully resolve most issues automatically, but some customers will need manual intervention. MCIT is aware that some malicious websites have posted code claiming to help customers recover from the outage. MCIT encourages all customers to obtain information only from CrowdStrike sources or contact the SamCert team via email at Samcert@mcit.gov.ws
