Prince Siso Belém Siso, the only brother of His Majesty King Letsie III, has had the privilege of witnessing the King’s growth and development up close. Therefore, no one is better suited to talk about His Majesty than his closest brother.
In a rare interviewlesotho timesThis week, Chief Prince Seyiso of Mazien, where the royal residence is located, provided a unique insight into the monarch’s character, personality and leadership style.
According to Prince Seyiso, the most striking thing about King Letsie III’s character is his patience.
“He always thinks first and then acts,” he said.
“Sometimes we get really angry at him for not acting soon enough, but when he does, we realize if he had rushed it, the results wouldn’t have been the same.”
This quality of patience serves Letseye III well in his role as a leader, allowing him to make wise decisions and avoid acting impulsively.
Prince Seiso said King Letsie’s religious beliefs were based on Catholicism and he was very committed to the unity of the Basotho nation. The King’s ardent wish was to make Lesotho, the land of his ancestors, a peaceful home for all.
According to Prince Seiso, his brother is not immune to frustration and disappointment. Many things in Lesotho bother him.
However, as a constitutional monarch, his actions were constrained by protocol and tradition.
Despite this, he remains passionate about issues affecting the country, especially food security.
Prince Seiso said firmly: “His wish is to see every Mosotho person sleep well after having a full meal.”
“He believed that everyone had the right to have enough to eat and no one should go hungry.”
King Letseye III’s passion for food security is evident in his support for initiatives to promote agricultural development and self-sufficiency.
In January 2014, Letseye III was named African Nutrition Champion by the Assembly of African Heads of State.
Rome, Italy, 1 December 2016 – José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has appointed Juan Manuel Letsie III as the Organization’s newest Special Ambassador for Nutrition.
The announcement was made at a high-level international seminar on “Healthy Diets and Sustainable Food Systems for Improved Nutrition” (1-2 December 2016), which aimed to explore country-level challenges and successes in reshaping food production, processing, marketing and retail systems for nutrition.
In March 2023, His Majesty, in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Nutrition and Head of State of Lesotho, hosted a high-level event on nutrition and food security in Maseru, which was namedAU High-Level Meeting on the Africa Nutrition Year.
One of the most striking aspects of the king’s character was his ability to connect with the common people.
Prince Seiso attributes this to their upbringing in Matsen (where our interview took place), where they learned to mingle with people from all walks of life.
“We grew up with boys of our own age and played like other children. We would travel long distances to herd the sheep so that we could understand the lives of the herder boys. This way, we would learn to appreciate their service to our family and know exactly how it felt,” Prince Seiso said.
“So it’s great to be around people that we grew up with. Sometimes it’s more than just attending a normal funeral. But we hope to meet up with other people that we know might be there and the king would be happy to see them.”
The prince also stressed that the Royal House of Mattheson is always open to anyone who wants to meet with them, “especially the monarch if time permits, to share their concerns or speak to the challenges they face.”
Prince Seiso said unlike in Maseru where people may have to go through red tape to meet the royal family, they believe in keeping the door open and listening to every Mosotho who has something to say.
“We want to find solutions together,” he said.
“We believe that by listening to each other, we can work together to create a better future.”
Finally, Chief Seiso’s words offer a unique perspective into the life of King Letsie III – a man who values patience, solidarity, and compassion.
As brothers, they shared countless experiences and memories that shaped Letsje III’s character and leadership style.
He extended his best wishes to his brother on his birthday and prayed that his brother would have the strength and wisdom to lead the Basutho system forever, as he had done for the past 28 years.
“I hope that on this day, the Basotho people can come together and pray for peace, unite; to stop these senseless killings that are ravaging the country. We really need to go back to the beginning and remember who we are,” Prince Seiso said.
