Family calls for an investigation into his death
Santo Domingo, RD.- “Cacho e´ Loco”, the alias of Brayan Escalante Caraballo, former corporal of the Army of the Dominican Republic (ERD), attracted media interest in 2019 through WhatsApp messages among a group of people, the Iraq War veteran threatened the then President of the Republic, Danilo Medina, saying that he would prepare a vehicle with explosives to destroy the National Palace, and eventually died in the Combronal prison in the municipality of Neba, Bahoruco province.
Escalante Caraballo, a native of El Peñón, Barahona province, was sentenced to five years in prison for domestic violence about two years ago and is currently serving his sentence in the public prison in Neba, Bahoruco province.
Former Barahona prosecutor Iván Ariel Gómez Rubio said on his blog that the former officer’s death was a “mystery” for his relatives, who asked the authorities to conduct an objective investigation to clarify the true circumstances of his death, according to a statement from a relative in prison.
However, Gómez Rubio (chief prosecutor of the aforementioned southern province) stated on his information page that he had informally received official information and the authorities’ version of his death, who assured that it would have been a suspected overdose, without specifying what type and what would have caused a heart attack.
The body of “Cacho e´ Loco”, alias, was taken to the regional branch of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) in the department of Azua de Compostela for an autopsy, which is mandatory in these cases (when the death is not completely clear) to determine the real cause of his death.
Escalante Caraballo died last Thursday (July 18) and his body was buried on Friday afternoon at the Municipal Cemetery of El Peñón in Barahona province, the community that was his hometown.
To date, neither the Public Ministry nor the General Directorate of Prisons has provided information about this fact to the media or public opinion, so the case is expected to be made public in the coming hours.
The facts that made “Cacho e´ Loco” famous
In May 2019, a former corporal of the Army of the Dominican Republic (ERD) was arrested in Punta Cana by intelligence agents of the military organization (J-2) and immediately transferred to the capital’s headquarters for investigation. The information stated that he would blow up the National Palace and threatened the then President of the Republic, Danilo Medina Sánchez.
Former officer Brayan Escalante Caraballo reportedly attempted to resist arrest when the officers involved seized a grenade, which was reportedly severely damaged.
The deceased (Escalante Caraballo) said at the time that he was a “war soldier, ready and trained to kill” and believed that anyone who “betrayed the motherland” should “die”, even himself.
He also said they should join civilians and other former soldiers in killing, documenting and making public videos of the Dominican state’s executions of corrupt people.
“Three or four drug traffickers opposed to the Dominican Liberation Party were in charge of this plan and sponsored it with two A-K47 machine guns or an M-16 rifle, a Glock pistol and a backpack full of magazines,” he lamented.
In this case, the former soldier was brought to justice in the Balahun jurisdiction.
