Authorities in Australia, Britain and Germany have warned of a rise in scams and phishing attempts following blackouts, including people offering to help reboot computers and asking for personal information or credit card details.
Banks in Kenya and Ukraine reported problems with their digital services, some mobile phone operators experienced disruptions and some companies experienced glitches in customer service.
“This blackout is unprecedented in scale and will undoubtedly go down in history,” said Junad Ali of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, adding that the last blackout of a similar scale was in 2017.
Flight confusion
Some airports have suspended all flights, while airline staff at others have resorted to manually checking passengers in, leading to long queues and frustrating passengers.
Thousands of U.S. flights were grounded, though airlines later said they were restoring service and working through backlogs.
“We understand that flight operations have resumed nationwide, although some congestion remains,” a senior U.S. government official said on Friday.
